Any of you who know me know that I don’t consider myself a liberty republican, though I do value individual liberty, state’s rights, limited government, and a free market economy.
Even though I don’t put myself into that mold I do I see the new “Liberty” wing of the Republican Party as an imperative group that we as republicans need to welcome and work with. I have been looking at several of the candidates that have sprung up over the country and wanted to share a few of them with all of you.
The first candidate (and my personal favorite) is actually the son of Ron Paul. Rand Paul is seeking the republican nomination to the U.S. Senate in Kentucky! He has taken the momentum his dad built and has also been able to take advantage of his dad’s online fundraising abilities by raising over $1.1 Million dollars in the last quarter of fundraising. The things that have impressed me with Rand is that he has shown a clear understanding of the issues, and also has a way of connecting with people, which is something I believe his dad did lack. Then we have Peter Schiff who is seeking the republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Connecticut. From what I have seen I do not feel like he stands much of a chance of winning the race. The last poll I looked at for Mr. Schiff said that he polled around 3% of the vote, he has spent very little of his life in Connecticut and is not known very well at all. There are a few other factors but I won’t take the time to get into those now.
I think we need to look at this group as a new section of leaders and minds that the Republican Party desperately needs. We have seen that in the past we as a party can get complacent and start trending towards “out of control spending” and bigger government. We need to concentrate on bringing more people into our party and I’m excited to see where these candidates go!
